Back when I was unemployed and living in less than optimal accommodations, I started pet sitting for my friends who could afford to travel. It was a way to get away from my roommates, as well as to try out other neighborhoods in the city, like Chelsea, Nolita, SoHo, and the Upper East Side. On top of that, I usually received gifts of coffee, chocolates, and bottles of wine for my troubles.
Though I've been gainfully employed for well over a year now, and live alone in a very nice apartment in Brooklyn, I still find myself walking dogs across Manhattan. Last night, for instance, Anna, an Australian shepard, and I were touring through SoHo when we happened upon an elderly Russian gentleman waiting for a bus.
The man took a keen interest in the dog and started scratching her neck and pounding her flanks affectionately with the palms of his hands. Then he turned to me and said, "Did you hear that they killed that coyote?" He was referring to the coyote recently spotted and then captured in Central Park
.
"Yes! Terrible...," I responded.
"Next time the ASPCA sends me their little envelope begging for money, I will return it...full of blood!" he spat back.
"Yes, well...goodnight!"
Uhu, I noticed that the most benevolent, altruistic and god's creature-loving people (when it concerns animals) become blood-thirsty fanatics when it comes to their own species.
Starting with Hitler and his German Sheppard Blondie...through many other intermidiate examples...and to my recent unpleasant but necessary elimination of 2 lines on my blogroll..
